How to repair a garage door

Should you install your own garage door parts? The answer could be yes, if you have a general knowledge of hand tools and can follow the simple how to guides laid out on this page below. First; know that you must only use tools specified and always make sure to be safe. Below are some

Garage Door Spring Repair Safety Checklist:

  1.  Never...Ever... Stick anything other than 1/2 metal dowl into your torsion springs to remove tension...do not use the following
  • Srewdrivers OF ANY SORT...
  • A metal rod thats ALMOST 1/2" THICK...
  • Anything other than a torsion bar...

Torsion Bars | Winding Bars Home Depot Has These 1/2" metal dowels in the hardware section, I buy one length and cut it into bars about 12-16" long for general spring repairs, however if your door is wood or heavier than average than I would make it a little longer. It just gives ya more leverage! Custom doors and commercial doors do not apply here they require a different size rod and also require two guys!

 2. Never...Ever Loosen the square nuts on a torsion spring with out the following things first:

  • Torsion system is in a locked configuration with a winding bar in place sitting safely against the door... you see the spring cannot release its energy with a winding bar inserted...To do this simply insert one bar into the accesable hole and rotate up enough to get the second bar into the next hole at this point you can secure|lock

the torsion system safely in place by resting the second bar on the back of the garage door|strut...ONLY LOOSEN NUTS ON THE SIDE THAT HAS THE TORSION BAR LOCKING THE ENTIRE TORSION SYSTEM IN PLACE.

  3. Always Install new garage door opener parts do not Jerry Rig your opener...
  4. When installing garage door springs do not use a screw driver as a replacement for winding bars or torsion bars.
  5. Wear safety glasses with power tools.
  6. Use common sense when installing your parts.
  7. When all else fails and it seems to scary call a local garage door technician.
  8. Never jump out your garage door sensors this safety system became code for a reason and that is to protect you, your belongings, kids and the family pet. Although their is a secondary safety feature installed ( force adjustment ) if this feature is set to tight your garage door still can hurt a small child or pet.
