By GaragePro

Here is a typical garage door torsion spring system, take your time to familiarize your self with
the different parts.
Tools Needed For Torsion Conversion
-
3/8" dirve ratchet - 9/16", 7/16",mabey 1/2" Sockets [I use an impact]
-
Hammer [To bang on stuck parts]
-
Step ladder or five gallon bucket to stand on [every one has something to stand on in there garage its
a fact]
-
Lubricant- wd-40, sewing machine oil, or my favorite Motor oil in an oil can.

AS ALWAYS USE SAFETY PRACTICES:
-
Garage Door Spring Safety
-
General Garage Door Safety
-
Task Specific safety Below (RED)
Removing Old Extension Spring Sytem:
Warning: If Door us up with broken spring do not use
emergency release door will fall.
-
Extension springs have @ least 90Lbs of linear force applied
each, you must safety and evenly lift the door on a level
plane, this is better with two people but I do it my self and yes I have back
problems.
-
When the door is fully up Lock it in place with a set of vice grips on
the track, tighly under the first roller (bottom roller). Do this on both sides of the door so that the
vice grips keep the door from falling down and hurting some one.
-
With the door fully open remove
the LOOSE extension
spring and the BROKEN extension
spring. This is self explanitory with your linear extension
springs... However after removing old cables sand springs dont for get to remove the sheeve
wheels, these sheeve wheels are usless now because the new shorter cables will now go to a set of
drums (see above diagram.
-
BE CAREFUL FINGERS CAN GET CAUGHT BETWEEN SECTIONS ON THIS STEP (it
hurts really...really bad*) Now the door has no tension on it so with your friend standing in the
center of the door holding it up (its wieghtless with the door in the horizontal/up position) so this
is easy. While he/she is holding the door up remove the vice grips and lower the door on a LEVEL PLANE,
if take the door out of square as you lower it you run the risk of the top rollers falling out of the
track as you lower it.
-
The door is now compleately safe... Remove bottom brackets if different than the picture below. And
install new ones if you can change to a fresh bolt configuration for added strenth but not nessesary if
the current 3 bolt configuration is strong enough. Insert 7-8' cables onto brackets prior to
installation of the bracket (easy way)
